Visiting Belize in May? Do not miss the Chocolate Festival
Long before chocolate was a sweet treat eaten across the world, the ancient Maya living in what is now Belize were experts in crafting chocolate drinks and dishes. Today, one of the most exciting festivals in the country is the big Chocolate Festival held every year in and around the town of Punta Gorda in Belize’s southern Toledo District.
In 2019, the Chocolate Festival will be held from May 24-26. For the past decade, the Chocolate Festival has been a popular showcase of all things chocolate, including unusual products like chocolate soap and chocolate beer. Attendees can try more conventional recipes as well as sample the delicious organic chocolate varieties that grow throughout the Toledo District. Locals farms also open their doors to visitors, making the festival the perfect time to explore the natural beauty of the region.
Friday, May 24, 2019, will begin with the festival’s signature event, pairing live music, Belizean chocolate, and a selection of excellent wines. Held at the Lodge at Big Falls in the village of Big Falls about 18 miles from Punta Gorda, the night will include a performance from the Garifuna Collectives.
Saturday, May 25, 2019, will be when the Taste of Toledo street fair is held all along Front Street in the town of Punta Gorda. Cultural displays and concerts will highlight the five biggest cultural groups in the Toledo District: Kriol (Creole), Maya, Garifuna, East Indian, and Mestizo. Expect plenty of dancing, local handicrafts for sale, games, and activities for kids, cold beer, and, of course, plenty of tasty chocolate treats. The day will end with a Taste of Toledo cooking competition that will award prizes for the top sweet and savory dishes.
Sunday, May 26, 2019, is the last day of the festival. Events will kick off at 12:00 noon at the Julian Cho Technical High School near the town of Punta Gorda with live musical performances, including traditional Maya harp ensembles, Marimba, and traditional Maya dances. Participants can try a traditional Maya drink made with chocolate, black pepper, and corn or simply browse through the artwork and other handicrafts on sale. At 7:00 PM, the festival will conclude with a fireworks display.
