5 Amazing Belize Vacation Destinations
Located just 2-5 hours’ flying time from the United States, Belize is a wonderland of natural beauty and many exciting things to do and see.
Here are 5 amazing Belize vacation destinations you should definitely include on your trip:
Cayo District
The “wild west” of Belize, Cayo District has few cows but more than makes up for it with plenty of unspoiled, beautiful nature. The tallest waterfalls in all of Central America are found here along with enormous parks and protected wildlife refuges. San Ignacio, the second-largest municipality in Belize, is the unofficial capital of Cayo District and home to a burgeoning eco-tourism industry.
Measuring just 16 miles from north to south, Placencia is a narrow peninsula fronting the Caribbean Sea in southeastern Belize. Despite its recent boom in popularity as a tourist destination, Placencia elegantly maintains its traditional communities of fishermen with a lovely collection of beach bars, cafes, and resorts. Placencia is the gateway to the southern Belize Barrier Reef, including some of the finest snorkeling and scuba diving spots in the country.
The southernmost district in Belize, Toledo is also the most rural, a true natural paradise. Home to ancient Maya communities and cacao farmers, Toledo District has pristine rivers, unspoiled rainforest, and some of the finest ancient Maya ruins found anywhere in Belize. Unique adventure options in Toledo include organized home stays in local villages to learn more about Maya and Creole culture.
The largest island in Belize, Ambergris Caye (islands are called “cayes” in Belize, pronounced “keys”) still preserves its old-world charm. Only the southern half of the island is populated, with bicycles and golf carts being the preferred method of transportation. Home to some of the finest restaurants in the country, Ambergris Caye is also the gateway to the Belize Barrier Reef.
Offshore Islands
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Belize Barrier Reef is composed of hundreds of gorgeous islands and atolls along a vast coral reef. Palm trees, sugar white sand, and beautiful lagoons lead to an underwater paradise of colorful marine life, including vast schools of fish, playful dolphins, rays, sharks, and five species of sea turtle. It is this abundance of aquatic life that make the offshore islands a mecca for snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and sailing.
