Belize to be included in National Geographic’s Top 50 Best Dive Destinations Travel Guidebook
The local media in Belize was abuzz last week week following the arrival of a team from National Geographic. Visiting the country as part of their world tour to research and take photographs for an upcoming dive guidebook, dive master Chris Taylor and his wife, travel writer Carrie Miller, spoke to the local press about why they were including Belize for the upcoming book, scheduled to be released in early 2020.
Taylor told the local press that his team is in Belize in order to photograph and research the best dive sites in Belize, including famous sites like the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the Belize Blue Hole, but also lesser-known sites such as the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. But Taylor added that his team also included non-divers in order to understand and research complimentary activities that will appeal to non-divers such as exploring Belize's rainforests and ancient Maya sites such as Altun Ha.
Miller has been a writer for National Geographic since 1998, but this is the first time in Belize for both Miller and her husband. The upcoming dive guidebook is a first of its kind for National Geographic, which has never before commissioned such a lengthy assignment of this type. When completed, the National Geographic book will also feature an introduction by Dr. Sylvia Earle, a marine biologist working for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), who visited Belize in 2010.
Belize is the ninth stop out of 50 planned destinations around the world for Miller and Taylor, and their team is expected to be in Belize for a full week. Their plan is to cover a wide gamut of dive sites, including those which are appealing for beginning and intermediate divers. Miller also had high praise for the government of Belize's aggressive approach to eliminating plastic waste and protecting marine environments, a key element of sustainable tourism. Miller stated that Belize is well on its way to becoming a global leader in this field.
