Canada’s CBC Recommends Visiting Belize
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation recently published an article extolling some of the most exciting adventure destinations around that everyone should put on their "bucket list." Included on the CBC's report was Belize, a small country in Central America on the Caribbean coast.
Nicknamed "The Jewel" for its pristine landscapes and more than 400 gorgeous offshore islands, Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. A former British colony, Belize is a mostly rural country of some 375,000 people that, together, form a melting pot society renowned for its genuine warmth and friendliness.
Belize was highlighted as a "bucket list" destination in the CBC's report partly because of its amazing offshore reef system. The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that are a world-famous mecca for snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, sea kayaking, stand-up paddling, and windsurfing.
As part of the second-largest reef system in the world (following Australia's Great Barrier Reef), the Belize Barrier Reef's most famous attraction is the Great Blue Hole. Made famous in 1971 by legendary French marine biologist Jacques Cousteau, who declared the area one of his top 10 favorite dive sites in the world, the Great Blue Hole is a natural sinkhole measuring more than 1,000 feet wide and 400 feet deep.
With its deep sapphire waters, the Great Blue Hole is easily identifiable from space. Only open to experienced divers, the Great Blue Hole allows divers to explore a vast subterranean cave that became submerged at the end of the last great Ice Age some tens of thousands of years ago.
On December 15, 2017, Air Canada began flying non-stop to Belize for the first time. Air Canada entered the red-hot tourism market in Belize following arch rival WestJet's entry in 2016. Residents of Calgary and Toronto can now fly non-stop to Belize City in around five hours. All of the top airlines in the United States also now offer non-stop flights to Belize from cities such as Denver, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
