Lobsterfest Kicks Off the Summer Season in Belize

Belize Lobsterfest

The summer season officially kicks off in June with several lobster festivals held around the country. Islands like Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker along with coastal communities like Placencia celebrate the opening of lobster season with multi-day festivals featuring a delicious assortment of culinary delights made from the world’s favorite crustacean.

Spiny lobsters are native to the waters of Belize, and traditional fishing communities around the country herald the opening of the season with music, games, handicrafts, and dozens of innovative dishes featuring lobster. Events include a Miss Lobster Festival and lobster catches. Live music is an essential part of every lobster festival around the country with festivalgoers dancing on the beach throughout the night. During the day, face painting booths, souvenir stalls, workshops, and a variety of silly and fun games provide plenty of entertainment for the whole family.

The lobster festivals also coincide with the “off” season when many tour operators, resorts, and vacation companies offer deep discounts. All of the biggest airlines in the United States, including Southwest, American, Delta, and United, offer non-stop flights from major cities across the country at fares up to 40% lower than during the high season. The start of the green season, a time of greater precipitation, does not usually come until the beginning of July, making June an ideal month to visit Belize.

The lobster festivals signal the beginning of the summer season in Belize, a time of abundant sunshine and pleasant temperatures. The lobster festival in San Pedro, the capital of Ambergris Caye, lasts a full week with chefs from local restaurants and cafes competing to design the best lobster dish. The Placencia Peninsula in southeastern Belize holds a three-day festival that is the biggest party of the year in the region. Dozens of local bands keep the festivalgoers dancing until dawn. Caye Caulker is home to a more laid-back lobster fest lays claim to being home of the first lobster festival, and today it’s a mecca for backpackers from around the world.

Other summer activities to enjoy in Belize include the Cashew Festival, and a variety of fairs held in towns and villages throughout the country.
