Belize Is 2019’s Hottest Holiday Destination
Kayak.com, one of the world’s leading travel sites, has recently published their travel forecast for 2019. Amongst other findings, Kayak revealed that Canadians are increasingly traveling further abroad during the holidays. The increase of affordable, non-stop flights to warm weather destinations has landed Belize as one of Kayak’s hot holiday destinations.
Kayak isn’t the only major travel information website that has recommended Belize as a top destination to visit in 2019. Lonely Planet, one of the largest publishers of travel guides in the world, recently selected Belize as a top 10 vacation destination in 2019. Belize was given high marks for its “untouristy” feel, pristine landscapes, and friendly inhabitants.
Belize was also praised for its government strong pro-environment stance which paid big dividends in 2018. The government imposed a moratorium on all offshore drilling on its offshore reef, the largest in the Western Hemisphere. And the reef, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was upgraded from “endangered” to “healthy” earlier this year.
Situated just south of Mexico on the western edge of the Caribbean, Belize is a former British colony and current member of the Commonwealth. English is the official language, and Canadians can visit Belize without needing to obtain a visa. The mainland is covered in thick jungles and is home to more than 600 ancient Maya sites, more than any other country in the world.
Currently, low-cost air carrier WestJet operates nine weekly non-stop flights to Belize City (airport code: BZE) from both Calgary (code: YYC) and Toronto (code: YYZ). First launched in the winter of 2016, these flights became so popular that WestJet added four new flights per week for the 2018/19 winter season. Not wanting to miss out, Air Canada also began flying to Belize in 2017 and now offers several flights a week from Toronto. Flying time to Belize from either Calgary or Toronto is approximately five hours. And five different airlines in the United States now fly to Belize from cities such as Chicago, Denver, and Minneapolis.
